What is the Center all about?
In 2007, the Research Center for Communication and Development Knowledge Management (CCDKM)
was started in order to focus on the ways that cultural, social, economic, political, legal, personal and spiritual
development can be enhanced through the use of all forms of media and communication.
Located at Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University (STOU), in Bangkok, the Center is a hybrid of academic,
researchers, policy makers and fieldworker advocates whose aim is to generate and transfer new forms of
knowledge and practice linked to communication to all levels of the society, with a special emphasis on marginal
and disadvantaged groups. Thailand and countries in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region including Cambodia, Laos,
Vietnam, Myanmar and southern China are a key focus.
What is the scope of the Center?
The Center will act as a provider of information, networks and open sources of learning focused on
communication and development. The Center's objective is to share these resources with anyone who
might benefit from the collected knowledge base, and enter into partnerships with specific groups in order
to facilitate the sharing process
What are the ultimate goals of the Center?
.... to be a regional hub of knowledge specifically concerned with the relations between communication
and sustainable, and socially and culturally aware development.
.... to link these themes with development and policy making in Thailand and in the region.
.... to link with other initiatives similarly focused from around the globe.
What are the sources of funding for CCDKM?
Mostly self-funded through grant getting for specific projects with some partial support from the host university,
STOU.
What are the Center’s strategies and approaches to its work?
1. Participation: The key tool for Center work is based on interaction and collaboration. Major partners
are drawn from interested practitioners and communities who become affiliated with CCDKM for
specific projects and on-going consultation.
2. Networking: Social connections and organizational links provide the basis for generating projects
and the building and application of knowledge.
3. Interdisciplinarity: Contributions and expertise are drawn from a wide range of scholarly and
community-based knowledge frameworks
4. Knowledge Management: Information and resources will be compiled, analyzed, sythesized,
clustered and applied with a focus communication and media as these intersect with potentialities
for development and sustainable social change. Benefits are looked for in relation to project partners,
stakeholders, target groups and local and regional communities
5. Virtual Open Source: Information gathered and new knowledge generated around issues related to
communication and development will be available as an on-line e-resource. The CCDKM website,
www.CCDKM.org, will act as a cyber-hub for open source materials, commentary and networking.
Who can join in Center initiatives?
Anyone from anywhere, - local, regional, global - can contribute, share knowledge and perspectives for the
betterment of the society.
Who can work for the Center?
As CCDKM is very new, and there are severe budgetary retrains, it relies on volunteers, local and global,
