Center Talk for November is crowded with reports on various activities, starting from the “Cho Fha” and the “Khatin” ceremonies in Phichit where CCDKM acted as one of the hosts. We do extend to you all best wishes from these great celebrations.
CCDKM staff have finished four reports dealing with “Situational Studies of Media and Youth in Thailand”, with three more to follow by the end of November. We plan to publish these studies in order to share knowledge and hopefully provide enhanced benefits for Thai society.
The other main activity this month as been the CCDKM visit with a youth based development network in the North. Between Nov 16 and 19 staff went to Nan province, five hours drive east of Chiang Mai for information gathering and to share in and learn for their community-based activities. This weekend was devoted to young people in the network investigating and mapping the social and cultural dimensions of their own community, with a view to generating and systematizing local knowledge and history. Although an organizational overview was provided by adult community youth workers, the activity was conducted by the young people themselves interviewing key respondents in the community and assembling all the ‘data’ for further work and with the eventual goal of using media platforms (video, multimedia) to record and preserve ‘local wisdom’. CCDKM will be trying to assist in the development and implementation of this project.
Our next trip will be to the E-sarn area (Northeast Thailand). Our aim to to support youth media initiatives, promote the confidence of young people in their use of media and to encourage this knowledge to be applied to the conservation of community based history and practices.
